Russia keeps ships in the Mediterranean: Navy veteran told if shelling is possible from there

Russia Keeps Ships in the Mediterranean: Naval Veteran Tells If Shelling Is Possible

There are 10 Russian ships in the Mediterranean Sea, of which 5 are carriers of Caliber missiles with a total salvo of 72 units. The Russians had plans for this grouping of ships, but they failed to materialize.

In general, the presence of Russian ships in the Mediterranean does not contradict international standards. Russia has a logistic base in Syrian Tartus, so its ships can be located there. Andrey Ryzhenko, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2004-2020, told Channel 24 about this.

Russia had plans for a ship in the Mediterranean sea

Ryzhenko said that earlier this ship grouping of the aggressor country had even more ships. In his opinion, the Russians probably planned to transfer it from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. However, Turkey interfered with the plans of the invaders.

“After the start of the Russian war against Ukraine, the Turkish government used its right, according to the Montreux Convention, and on February 28 simply banned the entry of any warship into the Black Sea. In general, this concerned Russian ships,” said the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2004-2020 .

Is shelling possible from the Mediterranean

Ryzhenko recalled that at the beginning of a full-scale invasion in the Mediterranean Sea there were 2 launch vehicles of the Moskva cruiser type. So far, there are 10 ships there, but Russia is unlikely to use them for rocket attacks on our state.

I don’t think they can use their missile weapons from the Mediterranean Sea against Ukraine , because the trajectories of the missiles must pass through the NATO countries – Turkey or Greece. This will not happen, Fesenko noted.

However, this is not the only reason why missile launches from the Mediterranean are unlikely. The fact is that there is a rather mountainous terrain, moreover, unfamiliar to Russians. There is an option that a launched rocket could crash into a mountain.

“By the way, so it was already in 2015 when they launched missiles through Iran. There was the same terrain,” said the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2004-2020.

He added that at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia kept 2 missile carriers in the Mediterranean Sea, which belonged to its Black Sea Fleet and were based in Sevastopol. However, Turkey did not let them back into the Black Sea.

How many ships of Russia are now in the Black Sea

Head of the Joint Coordinating Press Center of the Southern Defense Forces Ukraine Natalya Gumenyuk said that Russian ships are in the Black Sea on combat duty. However, the Russians have changed the number of launch vehicles.

The number of launch vehicles has slightly changed down. That is, if there were 6 of them the day before, now (as of the morning of January 21 – Channel 24) there are 5 of them. One submarine entered the base point, which can indicate a lot: either about problems, or about responding to a storm, or about reloading,” explained the head of the press center.

As of January 21, the total volley of the enemy from the Black Sea is estimated at 36 Caliber. At the same time, the total grouping consists of 11 ships.
