Russia reacted to the assignment of the name of the Ukrainian stadium Bandera
Russia condemned the assignment of the name of the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN, banned in Russia) to the stadium in the Lviv region, Stepan Bandera. The official representative of the country's Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, declared Moscow's indignation, TASS reports on Thursday, March 18.
Zakharova drew attention to the justification and glorification of Nazism, which has been observed on the part of Kiev in recent years. “All this is just like an epidemic of banderization in Ukraine,” the diplomat said.
On March 16, the Lviv Regional Council appealed to the government of Ukraine with a request to assign the name of Bandera to one of the largest football stadiums in the country “Arena Lviv”. This proposal was made by the deputy from the party of ex-President Petro Poroshenko “European Solidarity” Solomiya Rybotitskaya. It was supported by 68 deputies.
In addition, in early March in the Ukrainian Ternopil, the local stadium was named after the leader of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA, banned in the Russian Federation) Roman Shukhevych. This decision caused a negative international reaction. Including the Polish authorities reminded Ukraine of the atrocities of the UPA.
