Scientist assesses the likelihood of creating a cancer drug based on COVID-19

Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after V.I. Gamalei Anatoly Altstein told whether a cure for cancer based on COVID-19 could appear in Russia.

In an interview with Vechernyaya Moskva, the scientist said that a special direction has been developing in science for about 70 years – virotherapy of tumors. It is designed to help a patient with oncology heal due to viruses that are introduced into the body to activate the immune system.

According to him, in the future there will be an alternative to virotherapy – a “live” vaccine. It is a potential product of the development of coronavirus vaccines that could play a large role in the fight against various diseases.

“We are talking about the creation of a“ live ”vaccine, which is based on an artificially mutated virus. The changes made to it still allow it to reproduce, but its activity is reduced, ”explained the virologist.

Earlier, the head of the cell proliferation laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Pyotr Chumakov, in an interview with URA.RU, commented on reports of a chronic form of coronavirus.
