Scientists have established the duration of immunity to COVID-19 in those who have recovered
The number of antibodies in the body of those who had had a coronavirus infection slowly decreased in the first six months, and then the indicator remained at a stable level for 15 months. This is reported by FAN with reference to data from scientists from Sweden and Italy.
The research team examined 188 blood samples from 136 patients who had recovered. At the same time, their disease proceeded in various forms, but with characteristic symptoms.
The scientists measured the titers of anti-S and anti-RBD antibodies in plasma. The first antibodies target the spike protein, or S-protein of the virus, and the second, the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the S-protein, they play a key role for the binding of the virus to human cells.
The data obtained indicate that at the peak of antibody production, the levels of IgM and IgA in patients increased by 77 and 85%, respectively, after which, within 6-15 months, they fell to 4.5% and 11%. At the same time, antibodies to the S-protein reached approximately the same level within three months, and then halved in two months.
