Scientists have identified a new danger of high cholesterol

Scientists from the United States, Great Britain and the Netherlands have found that high blood cholesterol levels are associated with the risk of developing vascular dementia, which leads to the development of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The results of the study are published in the scientific journal PLOS Medicine.

It is noted that this is typical mainly for men. The researchers analyzed data from about two thousand participants in two large studies: the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging (BLSA), which was launched in the United States in 1958, and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), which has been under way since 2003.

At the first stage, scientists found that the main role in the development of dementia is played by violations of the so-called catabolism of cholesterol – its conversion into bile acids. Such disorders are common in patients with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. The researchers then decided to test in more than 26,000 patients in British general practice clinics to see if there was a link between exposure to cholesterol drugs, which block the absorption of bile acids into the bloodstream, and the primary symptoms of dementia.

Scientists have found that with high doses of drugs that block bile acids, the risk of developing vascular dementia increases only in men. According to experts, cholesterol catabolism and bile acid synthesis influence the progression of dementia through sex-specific signaling pathways in the brain.

It has previously been reported that some changes in appearance may indicate high cholesterol levels. This problem can be indicated by such a detail as “fatty bumps” on the face, known as xanthomas. They are located in the eyelid region and grow over a couple of months. Another symptom of high cholesterol, according to scientists, is the grayish-white rings around the cornea of the eyes, which doctors call the corneal arch.
