A group of Swiss and Spanish scientists have reported a new variant of the coronavirus called 20A.EU1. The results of scientific work are published on the medRxiv portal.
It is noted that the new variant of the virus has spread to European countries, and currently in some of them the number of infections 20A.EU1 prevails over the rest.
Scientists reported that the first infections were detected in the autonomous communities of Aragon and Catalonia, then it spread to Valencia. In July, the proportion of those infected with 20A.EU1 in Spain exceeded 40 percent.
Further, 20A.EU1 was detected in Switzerland, Ireland and the UK, and the proportion of those infected with it in September ranged from 40 to 70 percent.
An outbreak of COVID-19 pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus was first recorded in December 2019 in Wuhan. On March 11, WHO announced that the situation could be characterized as a pandemic. As of October 29, there are more than 44.8 million people infected with coronavirus in the world, of which 1.1 million have died, another 30.1 million have recovered. Most of the infected are in the USA, India, Brazil, Russia, France.
