Scientists have warned that the organs of people who have had COVID-19 can “age” for decades. It is reported by The New York Times.
The study involved 89 thousand people who have had COVID-19, as well as 1.6 million people who have not been exposed to coronavirus infection.
It is noted that in healthy adults 30-40 years old, the loss of kidney function is about one percent per year. Serious infections can lead to more severe or even permanent damage to this organ, or to chronic disease.
According to one of the study authors, Dr. Ziyad Al-Ali, 4,757 people with the disease experienced a 30 percent loss of kidney function within one year. “This is equivalent to an organ aging by 30 years,” he said.
It is not known exactly why the kidneys are severely affected by the coronavirus infection. According to scientists, this organ may be especially sensitive to various inflammatory processes in the body, or to the activation of the immune system. Also, impaired renal function can cause blood clotting problems.
Researchers have previously stated that unvaccinated children are 21 times more likely to suffer from heart inflammation during the course of the disease than their vaccinated peers.
