Seagate has announced plans to release a line of low-cost hard drives with capacities up to 20TB for general users.
It is reported that Seagate will reduce the cost of HDDs through the use of recording technologies PMR and SMR. The company now produces 20 TB hard drives using the more advanced HAMR technology. The products are too expensive and business-oriented. But PMR-models can be sold to ordinary users.
Seagate says shipments of 20TB SMR and PMR hard drives will begin in the second half of 2021.
It is worth noting that earlier Seagate said that the use of HAMR technology will allow the company to quickly move to the production of more capacious HDDs, for example, 22 TB or 24 TB. It is not yet clear when these will appear.
