The RF Ministry of Finance will not make it mandatory to replace a paper passport with a smart card. According to the head of the department Maksut Shadayev, the replacement will take place voluntarily.

This can be done by those citizens who are ready to exchange a paper document for a digital copy of a passport in a smartphone.

“There is an agreed position within that it will not be obligatory,” the minister said on the air of the Russia-24 TV channel.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Finance announced that the decision to replace a paper passport with a smart card would be made by the end of this year.

The official noted that the digital version is a more convenient format for storing all the necessary personal data. In addition, a copy of a digital passport in the form of a QR code can always be shown on a smartphone.
