Ski legend fought death in the hospital

Christian Neureuther

Christian Neureuther had to fight for his life in the summer – after a trip to the forest. The German ski legend reveals the reason.

The 72-year-old father of Marcel Hirscher's buddy Felix Neureuther reports to “Bild am Sonntag” how he got big problems last summer after a tick bite. He was making wood in the forest when he was bitten by a tick and contracted early summer meningoencephalitis (TBE).

“I was damn lucky. I hadn't noticed the tick bite myself. It wasn't until a few weeks after the wood was cut that I wasn't feeling well. I thought it was shingles. When our son pressured me, I went to the Garmisch hospital,” reports Neureuther.

During the examinations, meningitis was found. “I have no memory of the first week. I was completely apathetic, had impaired consciousness and probably also a fever,” continues Neureuther. “I then came to the neurological department in Innsbruck Clinic. My brain was no longer functioning properly. Everything swam from left to right in front of my eyes. The dizziness was insane. At night when I had to go to the toilet, it really hit me against the wall . I couldn't hold myself up. “

Neureuther lost six pounds and is still struggling with the aftermath of the infection. “Turning my head is still not easy for me,” he says. But: “It will be fine. I firmly believe that the psyche also helps and heals a lot. I was actually never desperate during this bad phase. We as a family said: We can do it. I had the very best doctors, mine Rosi, our children and the grandchildren. “
