The European Union recently extended sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine, but did not impose the oil embargo that Kyiv requested. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that some EU countries are blocking the imposition of an embargo on Russian oil.

There may be positions regarding oil in the 6th package of sanctions against Russia

Landsbergis said, that in the negotiations on the embargo on oil from Russia, some EU countries are “categorically against” this decision. The Lithuanian official did not name the countries blocking the embargo.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, the draft of the 6th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, which is being prepared by the European Commission, does contain positions on oil issues.

However, he noted that proposals for restrictions on Russian oil could be excluded from the project due to a categorical veto. However, the talks are ongoing.

So far we have strong opposition from several countries, but the draft of the sixth package, the preparation of which the European Commission has begun, contains proposals regarding oil. They can be excluded by a categorical veto, but negotiations are underway, Landsbergis said.
