South Africa wants to return 1 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 to the manufacturer
The authorities of the Republic of South Africa (South Africa) want to return 1 million doses of AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine to the Serum Institute of India. This is reported by the Economic Times newspaper.
According to the report, South Africa motivates this decision by the fact that trials of the drug have shown its weak effectiveness in cases of the disease occurring in mild to moderate forms, which are caused by the dominant variant of the 501Y.V2 coronavirus in the country.
It is noted that another 500 thousand doses of the vaccine were to be delivered to the country in the coming weeks.
Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Health of South Africa, Zvelini Mkize, said that the republic had decided to postpone the start of vaccination of citizens against coronavirus with a drug from the Anglo-Swedish company AstraZeneca.
