Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov dies at 94

Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, USSR pilot-cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov died at the age of 94. This was reported in “Roskosmos”.

Vladimir Shatalov was born on December 7, 1927 in Petropavlovsk (Kazakhstan) in the family of a railway worker. In 1941 he took part in the construction of defensive fortifications near Leningrad, together with his father he served in the same regiment. After the war, he graduated from the Kachin Military Aviation School of Pilots in 1949, served in flight positions.

Shatalov made his first space flight on January 14, 1969 on board the Soyuz-4 spacecraft. He was the first in history to carry out the docking of spaceships, manually docking his ship to the Soyuz-5. This is how the world's first space station was formed. With Shatalov's participation, cosmonauts Alexei Eliseev and Yevgeny Khrunov made the passage through open space from Soyuz-5 to Soyuz-4.

    The second flight of Vladimir Shatalov took place from 13 to 18 October 1969 as the commander of the Soyuz-8 spacecraft. It was a unique group flight of three Soviet spacecraft (including Soyuz-6 and Soyuz-7) launched at 24-hour intervals.

    Shatalov made his third flight from 23 to 25 April 1971 as the commander of the Soyuz-10 spacecraft. Then the world's first docking of a spacecraft with an orbital station was carried out. It was planned to transfer the cosmonauts from the spacecraft to the Salyut station, but due to a malfunction of the docking station, it was canceled.

    From January 1987 to September 1991, Vladimir Alexandrovich Shatalov headed the Yu.A. Gagarin. He was awarded many orders and medals, including three Orders of Lenin.
