Sperm at risk due to COVID-19

Severe COVID-19 can threaten male infertility. This conclusion was reached by Russian scientists from Yaroslav the Wise Novgorod State University and St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University. Izvestia writes about this.

Scientists, together with colleagues from Kazakhstan, analyzed the results of sperm analysis in 62 men planning to participate in the IVF procedure. The first study was conducted in February-March, then its participants did not reveal any abnormalities.

The second study was carried out in August-September. Antibodies to coronavirus were detected in 32 volunteers, while their sperm count and their activity decreased on average by one and a half to two times. Three study participants who had severe COVID-19 had no sperm at all. Scientists have yet to figure out whether this is temporary or permanent.

Earlier, the chief doctor of the hospital in Kommunarka, Denis Protsenko, said that complications from coronavirus occur on the seventh to tenth day since the onset of the disease. He also added that the whole world is waiting for the third wave of coronavirus, as it was before with other viral epidemics. All previous epidemics, he said, proceeded in three waves, one way or another were associated with seasonal outbreaks in spring and autumn.
