TASS: a hole in the Soyuz MS-09 was drilled by a person unfamiliar with the ship's device

A hole in the utility compartment of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft was drilled in 2018 in zero gravity, TASS reports, citing a high-ranking source in the Russian rocket and space industry. According to him, this was done by a person not familiar with the device.

“Of the eight holes, only one was through, the rest were drilled as if with drill bounces, which rather indicates drilling in zero gravity conditions without the necessary support,” the agency's interlocutor said. According to him, they tried to drill one hole in the ship's frame. As the interlocutor of the agency specified, the hole was drilled by a person who had not been trained in the construction of the Soyuz MS spacecraft.

The hole in the skin of Soyuz MS-09 was discovered on August 30, 2018, when sensors on the International Space Station (ISS) showed a slight decrease in air pressure. The leak was located in the living compartment, and not in the lander, so it does not threaten the return of the spacecraft to Earth. Subsequently, the Russian cosmonauts sealed the hole with a special sealant.

As Kommersant wrote, the Roscosmos commission is prioritizing the version that the American astronauts could deliberately drill a hole in the Soyuz in order to deliver one of their sick colleagues to Earth as soon as possible. The head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said that the commission would have to establish the exact reason for the depressurization.
