The doomsday clock hand is closer than ever to disaster: how many seconds remain

The Doomsday Clock, introduced by the creators of America's first atomic bomb, is at a record close to midnight today. And it is midnight that symbolizes a nuclear catastrophe.

On January 24, the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists turned the clock forward. It stopped at 23:58:30, which means humanity has 90 seconds left before a major catastrophe.

Why the clock was moved forward

It is not difficult to guess who exactly became the main, but not the only reason for such changes. To a large extent, it was the terrorist country, which has been terrifying its neighbors for more than a decade and threatening the world community with nuclear warheads for more than a month, that provoked the approach of Doomsday. weapons remind the world that escalating conflict—whether by accident, design, or miscalculation—is a horrendous risk. The likelihood that the conflict could get out of someone's control remains high, the project noted.

In addition to using weapons of mass destruction against the world community, Russia is constantly deepening the crisis by provocations at nuclear power plants. By doing so, it violates international protocols and risks a massive release of radioactive materials. In addition, the consequences of the war that the aggressor country unleashed in Ukraine are not limited to an increase in nuclear danger. They also:

  • undermine global efforts to combat climate change,
  • lead to increased investment in natural gas, just when such investment should be reduced
  • < li>expand the range of uses of biological and chemical weapons,

  • slow down the world's response to climate change,
  • impede international efforts to overcome other global problems.

“Invasion and the annexation of Ukrainian territory also violated international norms in a way that may encourage others to take actions that challenge prior agreements and threaten stability,” the magazine stressed.

The crisis may deepen

Experts also stressed that Russia's behavior poses another threat. So, if she and the United States do not resume negotiations on a nuclear weapons treaty, it will expire in February 2026. And this can lead to:

  • elimination of mutual inspections,
  • deepening of distrust,
  • spurring a nuclear arms race,
  • increasing the possibility of a nuclear exchange.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned earlier, the world has entered “a time of nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War.”

What is known about the Doomsday Clock

This is a project of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, started in 1947, published by the University of Chicago. It symbolizes the tension of the international situation and the increase in the number of nuclear weapons. The hands of this Clock show the time until midnight – the moment of the nuclear cataclysm. The decision to move the arrows is made by the Board of Directors of the journal with the help of invited experts. Among them are 18 Nobel Prize winners.
