The famous Darwin Arch in the Galapagos Islands, which has earned the title of mecca for divers, has collapsed. This happened for natural reasons. Scientists believe that erosion is to blame.
Despite the fact that the Galapagos were settled relatively recently, the inhabitants of the archipelago have their own traditions. One of them says that on the day of the collapse of the Darwin Arch on Earth, the end of the world will begin.
The Galapagos (more than 100 islands, rocks and alluvial territories in the archipelago) are located in the Pacific Ocean at a distance of about 1 thousand kilometers from South America, administratively belong to Ecuador. The largest islands are home to about 30 thousand people.
According to scientists, the archipelago was formed more than 5 million years ago and is known for a huge number of local flora and fauna, many of which are protected by the state, and the islands themselves have been declared a World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
In the middle of the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin studied the nature of the Galapagos Islands. It is believed that it was here that the naturalist and traveler began to think about the mechanisms of evolution, which he outlined in the famous “Origin of Species”.
In memory of the great scientist, one of the islands of the archipelago bears his name, as well as a stone arch, about 18 meters high, located about a kilometer from the nearest land. Now, unfortunately, destroyed.
In 2017, in Malta, the “Azure Window” arch collapsed from natural causes, which has repeatedly appeared in films, including in “Game of Thrones”.
