The downing of the American MQ-9 Reaper by the Russians: Turkey calls for a

Ankara calls for a “smart resolution” of the US drone incident.

Turkey is discussing the possibility of “opening” the Bosphorus for the US military so that they can pick up an American MQ-9 Reaper drone shot down by Russian aircraft.

This was stated by Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, writes Bloomberg.

According to him, Turkey is monitoring the situation.

He stressed that Ankara is in favor of a “smart resolution” of the incident and maintains a dialogue on this issue.

“As you know, such an incident happened yesterday… We are closely following the event. We have different contacts,” the minister said.

Russian aircraft shot down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone

On March 14 , a Russian Su-27 fighter attempted to intercept a U.S. MQ-9 drone in airspace over waters outside the Russian maritime area. One of the Russian planes struck the propeller of an MQ-9, causing the US Air Force to sink its own drone.

The US military, who followed the pursuit of the MQ-9 Reaper drone by Russian Su-27 fighters over the Black Sea, was shocked. Su-27s circled over the Reaper and poured fuel onto it in order to possibly flood the drone's cameras or damage its sensors.

The White House said the United States is taking the necessary measures to ensure that the wreckage of the MQ-9 Reaper drone does not fall into the wrong hands. Washington called yesterday's incident “unique” because of how “dangerous, unprofessional and reckless” Russia's actions were.

The Russian ambassador to the United States was summoned to the State Department in Washington because of the incident. His meeting with Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Karen Donfried lasted about half an hour.

The Russian ambassador, in turn, stated that his country did not want a “confrontation” with the United States and that American aviation should stay away “from the Russian border.”

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexei Danilov said that the shooting down of the MQ-9 Reaper drone by the Russians is a signal from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to the West, which shows a willingness to raise rates.
