On June 10, the research vessel “Mikhail Somov” set off on a voyage from the Solombalsky terminal of Arkhangelsk with the expedition “Arctic Floating University – 2021”. Scientists, graduate students and students gathered on board, whose research interests are focused on the Arctic region.
Recall that the Arctic Floating University is a new project that combines science and education to preserve the Arctic environment and ensure sustainable development of the region. The project was brought to life thanks to the joint efforts of the Northern Arctic Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov (NArFU), the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet), the Arkhangelsk Branch of the Russian Geographical Society and VTB Bank, which became the official sponsor of the event. 55 scientists from 14 universities take part in the expedition in 2021: NArFU, Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, AARI, Kurchatov Institute and other best scientific organizations from all over Russia.
“This year, a comprehensive multidisciplinary scientific program is planned, which will investigate, in particular, the pollution of the Arctic seas and archipelagos with marine debris, the carbon balance of Arctic soils, the hydrological regime of the Barents Sea and the state of cultural heritage sites on Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land. It is important that students will be able to gain practical skills in conducting scientific research in real field conditions, ”explained Alexander Saburov, director of the Arctic Center for Strategic Research, Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after MV Lomonosov.
“We highly appreciate participation in this essentially unique scientific and educational project, which has no analogues in the world. This year, VTB Bank is supporting the implementation of the Arctic Floating University for the first time, and we hope we will have fruitful cooperation ahead of us within the framework of our Educated Country strategic program, ”said VTB Ecology CEO, Senior Vice President of VTB Bank Alexander Gogolev. – This year, the members of the expedition will study the state and changes in the ecosystem of the coastal territories of the Arctic archipelagoes Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya. The goal for this year was to obtain basic comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge about the Arctic region in expeditionary conditions of the high-latitude Arctic by the members of the expedition. We hope the weather will be favorable, and scientists will carry out all the planned research in full. “
The expedition will end on June 30, 2021.
