The minister stressed that the results of investigative journalism did not come as a surprise to the federal government. “The fact that this was once again examined and confirmed by journalists, we consider it confirmation [of the government's version],” Maas said. “However, there will be no new consequences on this basis.”

The diplomat stressed that the German government is still interested in cooperation with Russia. “It is in our interests to continue a constructive dialogue with Russia, especially on issues such as the conflict in eastern Ukraine and the nuclear deal with Iran. I suppose that Russia is also interested in this, ”he explained.

The state of health of Alexei Navalny sharply worsened during the flight from Tomsk to Moscow on August 20, the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk. On August 22, the oppositionist was taken to a Berlin clinic, whose specialists announced the discovery of traces of a substance from the Novichok group in the Russian's body. Russian doctors, who also conducted research, found no poisons. After his recovery, Navalny announced the involvement of the Russian leadership in his poisoning.

On October 15, the EU imposed sanctions on six Russians over the situation with Navalny. In particular, the director of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the Russian president's internal policy department, Andrei Yarin, and others fell under the restrictions. They are banned from entering the territory of the European Union, and their financial assets in European banks are frozen. In addition, sanctions were imposed on the State Research Institute of Organic Chemistry and Technology.
