The Bundeswehr plane was able to take out only seven people from the Kabul airport; conditions at the airport in the capital of Afghanistan did not allow more citizens to evacuate, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
“We can confirm that seven people were evacuated from Kabul on one flight during the night. Due to the chaos at the airport and the constant gunfire at the checkpoint, it was not possible last night to ensure that other German citizens and others to be evacuated without the protection of the Bundeswehr could not have access to the airport.” – said a spokesman for the ministry in Berlin.
According to him, it was also not possible to receive citizens who are in the civilian part of the airport – “the partners who are responsible for security at the airport did not give such an opportunity.”
The day before, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the security at the Kabul airport is provided by the American and Turkish military.
The day before, it was reported that two military aircraft sent by the Czech Republic to evacuate the country's citizens from Afghanistan were unable to land at the Kabul airport due to crowds of people on the runway. For the same reason, a German military plane circling over Kabul had to leave for refueling in Uzbekistan.
On Sunday, the Taliban (militants of the Taliban movement banned in Russia) surrounded Kabul, the last major city in the country that remained under the control of the Afghan authorities. Towards Sunday evening, militants entered the Afghan capital and now generally control it. Residents of Afghanistan and foreign nationals rushed to the Kabul airport in hopes of leaving the country.
