American actor Elijah Wood, known for his role as Frodo Baggins in the fantasy trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”, said that the image of one of the orcs in the movie saga was based on the appearance of the controversial Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. The artist recalled this during the Armchair expert podcast.
“One of the orc masks – and I remember it well – was designed like Harvey Weinstein to say 'fuck you,'” Wood said, explaining that, in his opinion, it can now be openly talked about, given that Weinstein is currently in prison. “Fuck it,” added the 40-year-old actor.
It is noted that initially Weinstein's company Miramax owned the rights to film adaptations of the works of British author John Ronald Ruel Tolkien. However, director Peter Jackson could not agree with the studio on the budget and the number of films in the saga.
Miramax then invited the New Zealand filmmaker to contact other studios and implement a three-film project there. Jackson was given one weekend to complete the deal, hoping that he would not have time to finalize the agreement. However, the director signed a contract with New Line Cinema.
Ultimately, the studio released films that earned billions of dollars at the box office. Thus, Weinstein made millions, but did not gain popularity on the team working on the fantasy trilogy.
