The share of the Indian strain of coronavirus in Russia exceeded 70%

The share of the Indian strain of the coronavirus COVID-19 in Russia has exceeded 70% over the past four weeks. Such data are provided by the GISAID platform, which provides open access to the genomic data of influenza and coronavirus viruses.

According to the classification of the World Health Organization (WHO), there are two variants of the COVID-19 mutation that have been found in India. These are strains Delta B.1.617.2 and Kappa B.1.617.1. GISAID denotes both mutations with its own abbreviations – G / 478K.V1 and G / 452R.V3, respectively.

According to GISAID estimates, over the past month, the share of the G / 478K.V1 strain in Russia amounted to 70.6%. Over the entire period of the pandemic, 273 samples belonging to the Delta variant, which was discovered in India in October last year, were selected and sequenced throughout the country. Of these, 187 samples were collected in the last four weeks.

According to GISAID, the UK is the leader in the number of samples taken of this strain, accounting for almost 40 thousand (31.8 thousand in the last four weeks). This is followed by India (4.8 thousand and three samples in the last month), the USA (2.5 thousand and 825), Germany (717 and 236), Singapore (699 and 327), Canada (382 and 34) and Russia …

Experts interviewed by RBC believe that the rise in the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia is associated with the seasonality of the virus and non-compliance with the restrictions, and the spread of the Indian strain does not affect this in any way. “I don’t think this is due to the modification of the virus, it is due to the geoclimatic conditions of today. It is clearly seen that the virus is seasonal, these conditions have now been created, ”said Alexander Chepurnov, head of the Laboratory of Especially Dangerous Infections of the Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine (FRC FTM), professor of virology.

According to him, although the Indian strain has already come to Russia and “spoiled a lot of blood and nerves,” he could not raise the wave of infection in such a short time.

Larisa Popovich, Director of the Institute for Health Economics, National Research University Higher School of Economics, agreed with his opinion. She believes that the Indian strain of the coronavirus is not very common in Russia, the increase in infection is due to the increased mobility of citizens. “Look how many people go without masks, are passive to vaccination – this is due to the behavior of Russians, and not to the strain,” said the specialist.
