A group of researchers calculated the weight of all SARS-CoV-2 coronaviruses that have infected people around the world.
Scientists first estimated the weight of one SARS-CoV-2. It turned out to be equal to approximately 1 femtogram (the prefix “femto” denotes the number that results from multiplying the original unit by 10 to the minus fifteenth power). The researchers then estimated the viral load in various parts of the body during the infection. As a result, scientists calculated that one person infected with COVID-19 contains from one to 10 micrograms of the virus.
The researchers also said that between one and 10 million people were infected with the coronavirus during the pandemic. Thus, the total weight of all SARS-CoV-2 viruses can vary from 0.1 to 10 kilograms.
