US Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said that it is still possible to resolve the situation around Ukraine through diplomatic means, TASS reports.
Speaking at a briefing for journalists, a Pentagon spokesman allowed a peaceful settlement of the crisis in Ukraine. The US Department of Defense believes that at the moment there is time and opportunity to resolve the issue through diplomatic means. However, Kirby stressed that the United States would continue to provide Ukraine with military assistance to “strengthen its defense capabilities.”
Kirby added that he did not consider an escalation of tensions around Ukraine inevitable. “We are not sure that President [Vladimir] Putin has made the final decision, so I will refrain from speculating about what we will or will not do in the event of an invasion,” he said.
Earlier, Kirby said that the United States has evidence that Russia is preparing provocations to justify aggression against Ukraine. The representative of the Pentagon is sure that Moscow is preparing a group of military men who will carry out an operation in Ukraine under a false flag.
