The United States is ready to discuss with Finland and Sweden joining NATO, if states express such a desire, said US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, RIA Novosti writes.
According to her, during the “five administrations of which she was a member”, the United States talked about the possible entry of these two states into the North Atlantic Alliance. “At any time when you are ready to discuss the issue of your membership, we will do it,” she said.
Earlier, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said that the country does not intend to join NATO. According to her, Sweden has for a long time defended its line in the field of security and is a partner of the North Atlantic Alliance. She added that Stockholm never spoke of its intention to join the alliance.
Political scientist Nikolai Mezhevich believes that if Finland joins NATO, Russia should respond by strengthening the Baltic Fleet. Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that the country has the opportunity to apply for NATO membership. During the New Year's address, President Sauli Niiniste recalled that Finland has the right to apply to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
