Russia can take various actions to destabilize the situation in Ukraine, one of them is the overthrow of the Ukrainian government, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said at a press conference following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva, the event was broadcast by Reuters.

Blinken accused Russia of having plans to use military, administrative and diplomatic means to destabilize Ukraine. “Some of [these plans] do not include the use of military force to destabilize Ukraine. One of them is a plan to overthrow the government,” the diplomat said.

The Secretary of State mentioned the exercises of the Russian armed forces, which are currently being held in Belarus. In his opinion, a large concentration of Russian troops turns the territory of Ukraine’s northern neighbor into a new springboard for invasion. “This [the fact of the presence of Russian armed forces in Belarus] would give the Kremlin the opportunity to attack Ukraine from the south, from the east, from the north, if the President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin will wish it,” Blinken believes.

At the press conference, Blinken also promised to hold consultations with US President Joe Biden, Congress and the leadership of NATO allies following the results of the talks in Geneva.

Earlier on January 21, talks between Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken ended in Geneva. The dialogue lasted only an hour and a half. Even before the event, both diplomats said they did not expect any big breakthroughs in the current relations between Moscow and Washington from the meeting. Following the meeting, the diplomats held press conferences on the results of the negotiation process.
