Expert of the World Health Organization (WHO) Maria Van Kerkhove admitted that in the future, when identifying new variants of coronavirus infection, the names of constellations can be used to designate the virus.
We are talking about the fact that the letters of the Greek alphabet will no longer be enough.
– Yes, we are really considering the option with constellations for the future … We thought about (names) of Greek gods or goddesses, but I said: please do not force me to say this publicly, – explained the WHO technical director for COVID-19, write RIA News.
In early June 2021, WHO decided to name the new covid-19 strains with the letters of the Greek alphabet. The new system for naming mutations will be simple, and the names of the strains themselves will be easy to pronounce. However, the main disadvantage of such a system of scientific names is their difficulty in memorizing them. In addition, according to representatives of the organization, people are currently calling the varieties of coronavirus in the place where they were first recorded, which “can be defamatory and discriminatory.”
