The fact that there are currently no engines for attack drones in Russia is one of the reasons for the absence of its own serial attack drones in the country. This is reported by RIA Novosti, referring to an interview with Mikhail Gordin, General Director of the Central Institute of Aviation Motors.
“I don’t think this is the main reason. It is sad that they are not there, but I am sure that in five years there will be typical domestic piston engines of various capacities – 50 “horses”, 80, 150, 200, 500, on the basis of which drones can be built in the interests of the Ministry of Defense, ”the specialist said.
In his opinion, “more than 500 horsepower, most likely, there will be no piston engines, gas turbine engines are already starting there, and below 50 there are electrical installations.” “There are still questions about fuel, whether it will be gasoline or kerosene. Nevertheless, we have already decided what engines the industry needs with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, ”added Gordin.
According to him, there is no catastrophe in lagging Russia behind other countries in drone engines. “Catching up and overtaking is much easier than running ahead. At the very least, we have information about the operation of foreign drones. Based on the experience of others, we can make ours better, ”said the CEO.
In October 2020, Izvestia, in a publication dedicated to the latest conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, wrote that the tanks “are quite tenacious in themselves”, but in their current form they are practically defenseless against modern drones.
In October 2017, American analyst Samuel Bendett said that Russian developments in military unmanned aerial vehicles lagged behind similar foreign projects, in particular Chinese, Iranian, Turkish, American and Israeli.
