“They wanted to throw an egg or cake at the president”: the man who hit Macron is being tried in France
The court of the French city of Valence is holding a session at which the case of Damien Tarrel is being considered. He hit French President Emmanuel Macron in the face, RIA Novosti reports.
At the beginning of the court session, Tarel confirmed the fact of slapping Macron in the face.
“I would describe this slap in the face as quite cruel,” the defendant said.
The man explained that he was surprised when he noticed Macron approaching the audience. According to him, he thought about doing something significant, asking Macron sharp political questions, taking a yellow vest or a French flag, but then changed his mind.
“A few days before that, we were considering throwing an egg or a cream cake,” Tarel said.
French politicians condemned the attack on the head of state. The country's legislation provides for such actions against a person endowed with state power, up to three years in prison and 45 thousand euros in a fine.
The incident took place during the politician's visit to the Drome department. The head of the Fifth Republic approached the people who were waiting for him to greet them. One of the men suddenly attacked the president and gave him a slap in the face. The security intervened in the matter, Macron was taken away, and the rowdy was detained.
