Today Kherson celebrates the 244th anniversary of its founding: how a resilient city resists the aggressor
From the first weeks of the full-scale offensive, Kherson has been under Russian control. However, the locals, despite the occupation, still feel like Ukrainians and resist the invaders.
Today, September 17, Kherson celebrates its 244th anniversary . Read the article on Channel 24 about the history of the city and the resistance of Kherson residents on February 24.
When the city was founded
In 1778, architect Mikhail Veteshnikov created a project for the Kherson fortress and began its construction. In fact, this year is considered the beginning of the founding of the city. Interestingly, the construction of the fortress was completed only in 1988.
Inside the fortification there was a complex of administrative buildings, in particular its decoration – the Palace Square ensemble in the center.
From the very beginning, Kherson was a port city, since it had access to the sea. May 31, 1778The first Kherson sea port was opened.
Background
Although the official year of foundation of Kherson is 1778, it is important to know that the city did not rise from scratch on the orders of Catherine II. Kherson has an extraordinary background, which goes back to the 9th century. At present, the sea route along the Dnieper “From the Varangians to the Greeks” is becoming popular – from the countries of Scandinavia along the Dnieper to the Black Sea to Byzantium. However, already in 1084, the chronicle mentions the “city of Oleshya” in this territory. Modern historians call it “the sea gates of Ukraine-Rus”.
During the Cossack time, only seasonal Cossack fisheries existed within the boundaries of modern Kherson. But the Cossacks, as deeply religious people, tried to equip camp temples there. It is known about the tract in the floodplains of the Dnieper, which was called Tserkovka.
In 1737, the Cossacks of the ataman Ivan Malashevich built the fortification of the Alexander Chance in the area of u200bu200bthe modern Porto Elevator.
The coat of arms of Kherson
In 1803, the first coat of arms of the city was approved. It depicted a shield, on a gray background of which is a black double-headed eagle holding a laurel branch in its right paw, and a flame in its left. In the center of the figure is a blue shield with a golden Orthodox cross and four rays.

On March 1, the invaders began shelling the city of the regional center – Kherson itself with artillery . The Armed Forces of Ukraine were forced to retreat – the Russians in a few days completely controlled the city.
The Ukrainian mayor's office of Kherson continued to work until April 25. Later, the invaders appointed their so-called authority.

Heroic resistance to the enemy
From the first weeks of the occupation, residents of the city were not afraid to go to rallies and declare their pro-Ukrainian position. Citizens gathered on the central Svoboda Square with Ukrainian flags and sometimes “bare-handedly” blocked the road for military equipment.

Meetings and protests were held regularly until mid-spring. The Russians used stun and tear grenades to disperse the protesters. Also, the partisan movement still operates in the place. Partisans regularly blow up cars with occupiers.
“Cotton” in Kherson
Ukrainian Armed Forces are constantly beating the positions of invaders in the city and region. In recent weeks, the amount of “cotton” in Kherson has grown significantly.
About a week ago, the Ukrainian army again ended up in the barracks where Putin's soldiers lived. Also often “cotton” visits the Antonovsky bridge.
