Ukrainian clubs have had the worst season in European competition in eight years

Today, on November 25, the fifth round of the group stage in European competitions will end with the matches of the Europa League and the Conference League.

Kiev Dynamo and Donetsk Shakhtar were simultaneously defeated in their matches before the final round and missed the chance to be in the spring part of at least one of the tournaments .

Theoretical chance to play in the Conference League in the spring remains at the Luhansk Zarya. Viktor Skripnik's charges are third in their group, having 6 points & # 8212; one point separates them from the second Italian Roma. It is today in Rome that the teams will find out who deserves the European spring more.

As for the performance of Ukrainian clubs in European competitions, we can already say that the current result & # 8212; worst in eight seasons.

If we take the beginning of the war in Donbass as a starting point, then the 2014/15 season was the most successful. Then we earned 10 points in the ranking of associations. The next season also ended with a high score of 9.8 points. This season we have only 3.8 points.

This season in European competition was the first in 14 years that our representatives were unable to qualify in the spring part of the Champions League playoffs or Europa League/UEFA Cup.

The last time Dynamo and Shakhtar finished in the last places in their groups in the Champions League was in the 2007/08 season. And two more Ukrainian clubs, Dnipro and Metalist, failed to qualify for the group stage of European competition.

This is also the fourth season in a row when there will be no club from Ukraine in the Champions League playoffs. The last time Shakhtar played there was in the 2017/18 season.

  • Dynamo lost the least to Bayern in the fifth round of the Champions League
  • Shakhtar in lost away to Inter and was eliminated from European cups
