Hero Cities of Ukraine
Due to a full-scale war in 10 hero cities officially appeared in Ukraine as symbols of struggle and resistance to the brutal invasion.
On March 6, by decree of President Volodymyr Zelensky, the title of hero cities of Ukraine was awarded to Kharkov, Chernihiv, Kherson, Gostomel, Volnovas and Mariupol.
On March 24, Bucha, Irpin, Akhtyrka and Nikolaev were added to the list of hero cities by a new presidential decree.
Bucha, Irpin and Gostomel became victims of Russian atrocities, which the world learned after the de-occupation of the Kiev region. Kherson has been under occupation since the first days of a full-scale war, but local residents rallied against the invaders, and now a partisan movement is active.
Chernihiv suffered severe damage during Russian shelling in February and March 2022, while the Russians were advancing in the North. However, the city kept the defense, despite the enemy's attempts to surround it.
Volnovakha and Mariupol are cities that were actually destroyed by Russia. However, the cities remain symbols of courage, especially the textbooks on the history of Ukraine will definitely include the defenders of Azovstal.
Kharkiv and Nikolaev are cities that have been resisting the invaders since the first day of the war and almost every day suffer from enemy shelling and rocket attacks.
