UN Secretary General: the world is on a catastrophic path to warming

September 18. FINMARKET.RU – The world is on the way to catastrophic warming, UN Secretary General António Guterres warned yesterday, referring to the report of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. “The world is on a catastrophic path to warming 2.7 degrees,” he said in a statement.

Western media explain that such a forecast is a blow to the goals set in the Paris climate agreement: it predicted that by 2030, the average temperature on Earth, if countries take a number of measures, will rise by 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial period. However, the UN report suggests a much more significant rise in temperature.

“We are breaking a promise made six years ago to achieve the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Failure to achieve this goal will result in huge losses of lives and livelihoods,” Guterres said in a statement on the climate change report.

Guterres noted that science is talking about the need to reduce harmful emissions by 45% by 2030 in order to achieve carbon neutrality by the middle of the century. However, a UN Framework Convention report suggests that if countries around the world do not change their climate protection policies, emissions will increase by 16% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels.

According to the Secretary General, the G20 countries are responsible for 80% of such emissions into the atmosphere, and therefore it depends on their actions whether the promise made in Paris will be fulfilled.

The Paris Agreement is an international agreement adopted in 2015, its main task is to keep the increase in global average temperature at least below 2 ° C.

Earlier this year, the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report warning that many climate changes are irreversible. Among other things, the report noted that if greenhouse gas emissions are not urgently reduced, it will be impossible to limit the increase in the global average temperature in the coming decades to 1.5 ° C or even 2 ° C.
