“Unauthorized picketing”: spouses arrested in Belarus for launching fireworks on New Year’s Eve

A married couple was arrested in Minsk, who launched a fireworks display in the courtyard of their house on New Year’s Eve.
This is stated in the Telegram channel of the human rights center “Viasna”.
Elena and Nikolai Gayevsky on December 31 at 23:34 went out into the courtyard to launch a festive salute. The security forces immediately detained the couple. The couple celebrated the New Year in the isolation ward on the Outskirts. They were accused of “unauthorized picketing”.
A policeman witness stated at the trial that the Gayevsky decided to launch a red-and-white salute. During the fireworks, they allegedly “shouted provocative slogans.” In addition, the proof of “guilt” was a subscription to the opposition Telegram channels.
As a result, Nikolai Gaevsky received 15 days of arrest, his wife – 13 days. The couple did not admit their guilt.
Nikolai Gaevsky tried to prove that the launch of the fireworks was his personal initiative, and he did not shout any slogans. In 2020, Gayevsky was already serving an arrest under the same article.
Recall that protest actions in Belarus began after the presidential election, which took place on August 9, 2020. Belarusians took to protest actions in many cities of the country. The security forces brutally dispersed people, used force, and arrested them en masse.
