Scientists from the University of Maryland (USA) have found that the mutated coronavirus is better airborne. The study is published in Clinical Infectious Diseases .

The authors of the study examined 49 cases of infection with different strains of SARS-CoV-2. In all patients, the disease was asymptomatic or with mild symptoms.

During the experiment, scientists asked volunteers with COVID-19 to repeat the alphabet three times or sing the song “Happy Birthday to You.” As a result, it became known that people infected with the alpha strain exhaled up to a hundred times more viral particles than those who had the Wuhan variant of the virus.

“We know delta is even more contagious than alpha. Our study provides additional evidence of airborne transmission of new strains of infection, ”the researchers noted.

The researchers also noted that medical masks reduce the risk of transmission of the virus by 50%. Therefore, in order to avoid infection, it is necessary not only to be vaccinated, but also to continue to use personal protective equipment, and also to ventilate the premises.

Earlier it became known that an increase in the incidence of coronavirus in the fall is definitely expected, but the indicators are likely not to be as high as last year, since the immunity of a part of the population has already been trained, said infectious disease doctor Yevgeny Timakov.
