US senators plan to visit Ukraine this Sunday, January 16, writes Politico, citing two sources familiar with the details of the congressmen.

US senators will arrive in Ukraine a few days after the upper house of the US Congress failed to reach a consensus on the imposition of sanctions against Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Politicians will arrive as part of a bipartisan group. They are expected to stay in Ukraine until January 18.

Details of possible meetings of senators with representatives of official Kiev are still unknown.

On January 13, the US Senate refused to impose new sanctions against Nord Stream 2. The bill of Republican Ted Cruz of Texas did not get the required 60 votes (out of 100 possible) for approval.

Earlier, the White House opposed Cruz's bill. The US administration expressed doubt that the document would help Ukraine. In addition, it will “undermine the unity of the European allies.”
