Virologist spoke about the conditions for the emergence of a new super-strain COVID-19
The next super-strain of coronavirus will not necessarily be the product of the Delta line, Izvestia writes.
Evgeny Kunin, a leading researcher at the Center for Biotechnological Information of the National Library of Medicine of the US National Institutes of Health, announced this during a conversation with the publication's correspondents.
Other variants of SARS-CoV-2 also continue to persist, he said. In this regard, there is a possibility that the next super-strain could be a continuation of a completely different branch of the coronavirus genetic tree.
“It is necessary to maintain the ability to bind well to the receptor, but at the same time to avoid binding of antibodies. It is not easy, since these regions in the genome overlap each other, ”said Kunin.
According to the expert, the “Gamma” option in this context is “made” more successfully, therefore it is necessary to pay special attention to it.
The virologist also explained that a geographically new super-strain of infection can occur anywhere.
Earlier, the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, said that currently an increase in the incidence of coronavirus is recorded in 36 regions of Russia.
