WHO urges countries to prevent new epidemics and pandemics
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus has called on the global community to heed the lessons of the current coronavirus pandemic.
The head of the organization also advised countries to prepare for new epidemics and pandemics in order to respond quickly if they occur. Ghebreyesus said this during his telecom address to the participants in the health summit of small island states.
“We must all learn the lessons the pandemic is teaching us … we need to do everything we can to prepare for, prevent, detect and respond to new epidemics and pandemics, based on universal health coverage and strong primary health care,” said head of WHO.
Recall that the organization declared the covid-19 epidemic a pandemic on March 11, 2020. This decision was made due to the scale of the spread of infection among the world's population, which could not be characterized as an epidemic.
