The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of the emergence of a new strain of coronavirus that will be more contagious than omicron. This was stated by the organization’s expert Maria van Kerkhove during a speech on the air of the program “Science in five minutes”.

According to Kerkhove, the more a new variant of the virus circulates, the more it undergoes changes. “Undoubtedly, they will be more contagious, since they will need to surpass the variants that are circulating now,” the expert explained and added that the strain will be able to overcome the effects of immunity.

Kerkhove also urged not to consider omicron a weak strain of COVID-19 due to a lighter course of the disease than when infected with the delta variant.

Earlier in January, infectious diseases specialist, vaccinologist from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in North Carolina Catherine Pauling called cough, nasal congestion, runny nose and fatigue the main symptoms of the omicron strain. According to the specialist, several signs may be enough to understand what exactly a person has become infected with.
