< p _ngcontent-sc100="" class="news-annotation">French President Emmanuel Macron does not exclude that he can provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with Leclerc tanks. However, it is too early for Kyiv to rejoice.
This opinion Channel 24 was expressed by military expert Mikhail Zhirokhov. He recalled that France had already named the conditions for the transfer of Leclerc tanks to Ukraine.
Among the main demands of French President Emmanuel Macron is that such a move by Paris should not cause an escalation.
“Providing Leclerc to Ukraine is just talk”
As Zhirokhov noted, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, France has been very cautious about supplying weapons to Kyiv. According to him, weapons from France came either through commercial firms or under certain conditions.
This is due to the fact that the internal political situation in France is very unstable. There is a lot of pro-Russian influence on politicians, which is why the French are very careful about handing over weapons,” the military expert said.
Zhirokhov believes that, despite Macron's statements, Paris is unlikely to decide to provide Ukraine with Leclerc tanks.
“Leclerc is still just talk. I don't think it will move to practical actions“, – said the military expert.
Why the allies are in no hurry to provide tanks to Ukraine
In the West, they are generally delaying the provision of tanks to Ukraine. The allies explain this allegedly by the fact that such equipment needs specific maintenance, with which Kyiv may have difficulties. The military expert is convinced that the reason also lies in the commercial interests of some industrialists.
This war is a kind of advertising showcase for the western industrial complex. No weapons manufacturer wants to see footage of burnt Leclerc or Leopard tanks. After all, this will be anti-advertising,” Zhirokhov said.
He added that maps of vehicles in poor condition on the battlefield may repel future buyers who want to purchase such tanks after the war in Ukraine.
“Therefore, until the West is sure that the Ukrainian military will be able to such weapons service and, most importantly, use on the battlefield, they are not very willing to provide such high-tech equipment,” the military expert noted.
Military assistance from France: in short
- At the beginning of 2023, France unexpectedly took the lead in the context of military support to Ukraine. The very decision of Macron to transfer AMX-10 RC light tanks and ACMAT Bastion armored personnel carriers provoked similar decisions from other countries.
- Italy and France may soon strengthen Ukraine's air defense. Both countries are completing the preparation of the SAMP/T air defense system.
- Despite the fact that France supports the Ukrainian people in the war against Russian aggression, the head of state Emmanuel Macron is still convinced that it is necessary to maintain a dialogue with the aggressor country
